Why Carnatic Music?

India, throughout its long journey in history, has given birth to several great traditions which are now the identities of this country to the world. But any discussion of Indian traditions is incomplete without mentioning its rich musical traditions. There are two major musical schools in India - Hindustani and Carnatic. While both traditions are jubilant in their respective greatness, the Hindustani tradition gets influenced by Persian and Arabic traditions during the Mughal era and changes its form. Carnatic, on the other hand, conserves its purity behind the walls of Bindhya and is still thriving on the tradition started by Saint Purandara Dasa in the 14th century.

The Origin

The name ‘Carnatic’ owes its origin to the Sanskrit term Karnataka Sangeetham which means “traditional” or “codified”.

Saint Purandara Dasa is regarded as the father of Carnatic school. He crafted around 4,75,000 kritis (keertanas) under the pen name Purandara Vittala during the reign of Vijayanagara kingdom.

Sri Shyama Shastry, Sri Tyagaraja, and Sri Muthuswamy Dikshitar are regarded as the trinity of Carnatic music because of their monumental contributions in the development of Carnatic music tradition.
